Keila: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Keila is an open-source newsletter tool for managing contact lists and designing and sending campaigns. It offers a visual block editor, Markdown, MJML and plain text, a form builder with double opt-in and captcha, segmentation, personalisation through Liquid templates, CSV import and export, a full API and automatic handling of bounces and complaints. Analytics with tracking are optional. The software is licensed under the AGPL-3.0, with no proprietary premium features. You can self-host Keila with the official Docker image or use the managed Keila Cloud.

According to its makers, Keila is developed in Germany; the project is maintained on GitHub under the organisation pentacent. According to the website, Keila Cloud runs on European infrastructure in Germany and France. With self-hosting, you decide where the data resides. Note the sending route: Keila can send through your own SMTP server or external services such as AWS SES, Mailgun, Postmark or SendGrid, and that choice partly determines under which jurisdiction email is delivered.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Keila

Keila is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Keila scores best on data residency.

Keila is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Keila together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
