Kiro is an agentic development tool from AWS, available as an IDE, command-line tool, web interface and mobile app. The IDE is based on Code OSS and imports settings and extensions from VS Code. Its hallmark is spec-driven development: Kiro turns a prompt into requirements, a design and tasks before any code is written. It also offers hooks for background tasks, parallel agents locally or in the cloud, and MCP support. You can choose models from Anthropic and OpenAI, among others, or open-weight models.
Kiro is built and operated by AWS, part of the US company Amazon. According to its documentation, prompts and responses of free and individual users are stored in US East (N. Virginia), and unless you opt out, content may be used to improve the service. For enterprise users, storage follows the Region of the profile, which can be Frankfurt, and content is not used for improvement. Inference runs through Amazon Bedrock, across several EU Regions in Europe. Some models use global routing, so check this per model.
