KoboToolbox is an open-source platform for collecting, managing and visualising data through forms, used mainly by humanitarian, development and research organisations. Forms are designed in a web environment and filled in on mobile devices with the KoboCollect app; results can be managed and viewed in the web interface. The service is offered as a hosted solution that Kobo itself runs and maintains, and the software is published as open source.
Kobo, Inc. is a US nonprofit organisation based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Its privacy notice states that the services are hosted and offered in the United States and are subject to US law, which allows government agencies to access personal data in certain circumstances. European organisations can use an EU server hosted in Ireland and Germany. Accounts and data cannot be moved between the global server and the EU server, so the choice has to be made when the account is created. The software is licensed under AGPL-3.0, and standard contractual clauses govern transfers of data.
