KumoMTA is an open-source mail transfer agent (MTA) for enterprises and senders of high-volume outbound email. The server is scripted in Lua and integrates with webhooks, AMQP, Kafka, Vault, Prometheus and Grafana, and provides traffic shaping and IP pool management. It can be scaled horizontally with Docker and Kubernetes. KumoMTA is installed and operated by the user and is positioned as an alternative to hosted sending platforms such as SparkPost, Bird or SendGrid at large volumes.
KumoMTA is developed by Kumo Corp, a privately held US company founded in 2023. The software is licensed under the Apache License 2.0. A company based in the US is subject to US law such as the CLOUD Act, but because the software runs on your own infrastructure, messages and queues stay under your control. Self-hosting allows a sending infrastructure located in the EU. Data residency and GDPR compliance depend on the environment in which you run KumoMTA.
