Ladybird is a web browser whose engine is built from scratch. It uses no code from Blink, WebKit or Gecko; it has its own rendering engine (LibWeb) and JavaScript engine (LibJS), plus some third-party libraries for common functions. The project started in 2019 as part of SerenityOS and became standalone in 2022, led by Andreas Kling. It is in active development: according to the project, a first alpha is targeted for 2026, initially for Linux and macOS, with Windows planned later. It is installed as a desktop application.
Ladybird is developed by the Ladybird Browser Initiative, a US 501(c)(3) non-profit based in San Francisco, California, and the source code is published under the BSD 2-Clause licence. The project states that it is funded entirely by donations and sponsorships, with no search deals, data collection or ads. The browser runs locally and is not a hosted service.
