Ljósleiðarinn is an open-access fibre network in Reykjavík. It builds and runs fibre infrastructure that several internet and telecom providers share, so customers can change provider without a physical change to the connection. The company sells wholesale access, backhaul, carrier and transit services to telecom companies, and it supports Iceland's international connectivity. It also builds fibre connections for homes and businesses, including in the capital area and in south Iceland.
Ljósleiðarinn is a fully owned subsidiary of Orkuveita Reykjavíkur, the Reykjavík Energy group, which is owned by the municipalities of Reykjavík, Akranes and Borgarbyggð. No foreign owner is involved. Customers who rely on the company for telecom services should ask where their personal data is stored and which data protection terms apply. The company is a network infrastructure provider rather than a cloud service. For European organisations its main sovereignty relevance is the open-access model: several retail providers use one fibre network owned by public bodies in Iceland.
