MailerLite: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

MailerLite is an email and digital marketing platform for creators, small businesses, online shops, non-profits and agencies. It offers email campaigns with a drag-and-drop editor, automations, signup forms, landing pages and pop-ups, a website builder, templates, reporting, sales of digital products and paid newsletters, and integrations with Shopify, WooCommerce, Stripe and WordPress, among others. It is delivered as SaaS and is not open source.

MailerLite is a Lithuanian company that was acquired in 2022 by Vercom, a Poznań-based Polish company listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. According to the data processing agreement, data is stored in Google data centres in the EU: in Germany for the older platform and in the Netherlands for the new one. That agreement names MailerLite, Inc. in San Francisco as the contracting party, while the Lithuanian supervisory authority is the competent one. MailerLite reports ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification. For European organisations, the contracting entity and the choice of a US cloud provider are points to weigh.

Why digital sovereignty matters with MailerLite

MailerLite is headquartered in LT and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data. The ultimate owner is based in PL, also within Europe.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so MailerLite scores best on data residency.

MailerLite is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs MailerLite together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
