Mapillary is a platform for street-level photographs and map data. Contributors capture images with any camera, and computer vision extracts map features from them for mapping and map updates. It is offered as an online service, with a web explorer, mobile and desktop uploaders, and developer tools that connect to GIS and mapping software.
Mapillary was developed by Mapillary AB in Malmö, Sweden, and has been part of Meta since the 2020 acquisition by Facebook. The service's terms name Meta Platforms Ireland Limited in Dublin as contracting party and are governed by Swedish law. Meta Platforms, Inc. is a US company, so the ultimate owner is subject to US law, including the CLOUD Act. The privacy policy mentions processing on servers in several countries and standard contractual clauses for transfers. For a European organisation, the Swedish origin of the product does not change the reach of the US group; where that matters, a European mapping platform with EU-controlled hosting is the alternative.
