MarkLogic: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

MarkLogic is a multi-model database with a built-in search engine from Progress Software. It stores documents (JSON and XML), text, graph, vector, relational, geospatial, binary and time-based data on one platform and, according to Progress, supports fully ACID-compliant transactions, including across multiple documents and clusters. Data can be loaded without a predefined schema. Besides MarkLogic Server, Progress offers MarkLogic Data Hub for integrating and governing data and MarkLogic FastTrack for search and analysis interfaces. MarkLogic runs on premises, in virtualised environments and in the cloud, in containers via Docker or Kubernetes, or as a managed SaaS hosted by Progress.

Progress Software is a US company, and MarkLogic is commercial, proprietary software. With self-managed installations you decide where the data resides, but with the SaaS hosted by Progress that is not a given; the sources consulted name no hosting regions. For European organisations, a US supplier is relevant to legal control over the data, even when the data sits on your own infrastructure in Europe.

Why digital sovereignty matters with MarkLogic

MarkLogic is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

MarkLogic hosts data in EU, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

MarkLogic is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs MarkLogic together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
