MD Adressbuch: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

MD Adressbuch is address management and CRM software for Windows from a German software developer in Coesfeld, active since 2005. It comes in four editions: a free version for private use, pro for small and mid-sized businesses, One as a CRM, and Team for distributed teams working in the browser. MD Adressbuch One manages contact data, creates bulk emails and form letters, keeps notes as a history per person, sets reminders and groups contacts. It also offers rights management, single sign-on via the Windows user name, automatic deletion according to your GDPR policy and vCard or QR-code export. SQLite, MariaDB or MySQL serve as the database.

The software runs on your own systems, so your contact data stays in your own infrastructure. According to the privacy statement, the Android and iOS app synchronises only over the local network and sends no personal data to third parties or the internet. The provider is a sole proprietorship in Germany; no parent company is named. Because you host it yourself, you decide where the data resides.

Why digital sovereignty matters with MD Adressbuch

MD Adressbuch is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

MD Adressbuch runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

MD Adressbuch is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs MD Adressbuch together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
