Melis Platform: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Melis Platform is a modular platform for web applications, content management and e-commerce from the French company Melis Technology. The Community Edition, with core, CMS, commerce and marketing modules, is open source (OSL-3.0) and built on Laminas. The platform is API-first and works with frameworks such as Symfony and Laravel. Developers can download the Community Edition through Composer, Docker or GitHub. Paid editions add support with service levels and further modules. With Melis AI you can connect generative and agentic AI to language models of your choice.

Melis Technology SAS has its seat in Paris, France, and the site names no parent company. You can host the software yourself or take it as a managed cloud service. According to the hosting terms, the place of service is fixed in the contract, so you settle the location of your data there. The website itself runs on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure in France. If you connect external AI models, data may be sent to the provider of that model. Check this beforehand.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Melis Platform

Melis Platform is headquartered in France and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Melis Platform scores best on data residency.

Melis Platform is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Melis Platform together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
