Memfault: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Memfault is a cloud platform for observability and over-the-air (OTA) firmware updates of embedded and connected devices. Devices send data such as crash reports, logs and performance metrics to the platform, where engineering teams monitor device fleets, investigate field issues and roll out firmware updates. The service is delivered as a cloud web platform that customers sign in to.

Memfault, Inc. is a US company, and its privacy notice gives an address in San Francisco. In June 2025, Norwegian chipmaker Nordic Semiconductor announced it was acquiring Memfault, saying the platform would continue and be integrated with Nordic's nRF Cloud services. The privacy notice states that Memfault's own data centres are in the United States and that its sub-processors process customer data only in the US. It describes Memfault as a data processor for its customers but names no European hosting option. For a European organisation, this means processing in the United States by a US-headquartered provider.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Memfault

Memfault is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Memfault hosts data outside the EU (US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Memfault is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Memfault together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
