Micetro (Men&Mice): sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Micetro is a DDI (DNS, DHCP and IPAM) orchestration solution from BlueCat Networks, originally developed by Men&Mice. The software overlays existing infrastructure and offers a single user interface and API for multi-vendor environments across on-premises, hybrid, cloud and branch networks. Features include IP tracking and conflict detection, granular role-based access with SSO and MFA, and support for Microsoft DNS/DHCP through a single lightweight proxy agent. You can install Micetro on a virtual machine, on bare metal or in a cloud environment.

BlueCat Networks acquired Men&Mice in May 2023; BlueCat lists Toronto and New York as its headquarters, with offices that include Iceland. The owner is therefore outside the EU, which is a CLOUD-Act signal. Because you install Micetro yourself, you decide where the managed data runs. The software is not open source.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Micetro (Men&Mice)

Micetro (Men&Mice) is headquartered in IS, which falls under the GDPR through the European Economic Area. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data. The ultimate owner is based in CA. Foreign control undermines part of the certainty a European headquarters offers.

Micetro (Men&Mice) runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Micetro (Men&Mice) is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Micetro (Men&Mice) together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
