Metabase: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Metabase is an open-source analytics and business intelligence platform. It offers a visual query builder, an SQL editor, interactive dashboards, subscriptions and alerts, so that people without SQL knowledge can explore data. Data teams can define trusted metrics in a semantic layer, and Metabase includes an AI assistant, an MCP server and an embedding SDK for customer-facing analytics. It connects to many databases and warehouses, including PostgreSQL, MySQL, BigQuery and Snowflake. You can self-host it, for example with a single Docker command, or use Metabase Cloud, a hosted service.

Metabase is developed by Metabase, Inc., based in San Francisco in the United States, so it is subject to US law, including the CLOUD Act. The open-source edition is released under the AGPL, while commercial editions fall under a separate commercial licence. Metabase Cloud currently offers two hosting regions, US West (Oregon) and Europe (Frankfurt). A European organisation can therefore choose the Frankfurt region or self-host to keep data on its own infrastructure, remembering that the vendor remains a US company.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Metabase

Metabase is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Metabase hosts data in EU, US. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Metabase is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Metabase together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
