Microweber: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Microweber is an open-source content management system and website builder with drag-and-drop editing. Users move text, images, videos and modules directly on the page and see changes immediately through Live Edit. The project focuses mainly on e-commerce, with an administration area for pages, posts, products and categories. Microweber is built on PHP and Laravel (version 2.0 runs on Laravel 10), requires PHP 8.2 or newer, and works with MySQL, SQLite, SQL Server or PostgreSQL. You install it yourself by downloading the package or through Composer.

The project began in 2015 in Sofia, Bulgaria, and its source code is available under the MIT licence on GitHub. Because you install and operate Microweber yourself, you decide which hosting provider and which country holds the data; a European host or your own server in the EU is therefore possible. The MIT licence allows you to inspect and adapt the code or have another party maintain it, which reduces dependence on a single vendor.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Microweber

Microweber is headquartered in BG and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Microweber hosts data outside the EU (self-hosted). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Microweber is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Microweber together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
