MikroTik develops network hardware and the RouterOS operating system. Its range includes routers, switches, wireless systems and LTE/5G, IoT and 60 GHz products, often sold under the RouterBOARD brand. Management tools include the WinBox desktop application and mobile apps; RouterOS is based on Linux and runs on MikroTik hardware as well as on standard x86 computers. RouterOS uses licence levels, which the vendor's catalogue lists per product. You install the equipment in your own network.
MikroTik, officially SIA Mikrotīkls, is based in Riga, Latvia, and according to Wikipedia is privately held by its two founders; there is no non-European parent company. Because the routers and switches run locally, network traffic stays on your own infrastructure. RouterOS is not distributed as open source. For European organisations this is an EU-based hardware vendor with equipment they manage themselves.
