MistServer: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

MistServer is a media server for internet streaming (OTT), aimed at developers and system integrators. The software handles live streaming and is managed through a web interface; the project's news posts cover SRT, RIST and WebRTC (WHIP), among other topics. A new project extends MistServer with video on demand: transcoding, subtitle generation and distributed caching across several servers. MistServer is delivered as downloadable software for Linux, Windows and macOS and runs on your own servers.

MistServer is maintained and supported by OptiMist Video B.V., which according to the maker is owned by its employees and has no external investors, together with its subsidiary DDVTech B.V., based in Leiden, the Netherlands. Since version 3.0, MistServer has been released into the public domain; all features are free to use, commercially as well. The company also offers paid support, SLAs, custom features and custom builds. Because you install MistServer yourself, you decide where streams and logs are stored. The VoD extension is funded through NLnet within the EU's NGI Zero programme. The download page lists version 3.12.

Why digital sovereignty matters with MistServer

MistServer is headquartered in NL and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so MistServer scores best on data residency.

MistServer is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs MistServer together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
