Mixxx: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Mixxx is free DJ mixing software for Windows, macOS and Linux. You use it to mix digital music files, with features such as BPM and key detection, beat sync, effects, support for DJ controllers and vinyl control. A live mix can also be broadcast to an Icecast server that you configure yourself. It is a desktop application that you download and install yourself; there is no paid or "pro" edition and no account is required.

Mixxx is developed by a volunteer community, and according to its website there is no company behind it. In 2025 core developers founded Mixxx e.V., a German non-profit association in Hamburg that represents the project in legal and financial matters and can receive donations. The association does not direct how the software is developed. The source code is released under the GPLv2. According to its privacy policy, the application uses no accounts or telemetry and has no update mechanism of its own, so your music library and settings stay on your own computer.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Mixxx

Mixxx is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Mixxx scores best on data residency.

Mixxx is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Mixxx together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
