MOTIS (Modular Open Transportation Information System) is an open-source platform for planning journeys on foot, by bicycle, with shared mobility and on public transit. Through a REST API it also provides geocoding, reverse geocoding and background map tiles. It accepts OpenStreetMap, GTFS, NeTEx, GBFS and real-time data. MOTIS is software that an organisation runs on its own servers, for instance to power a travel information service. The source code is developed on GitHub by the motis-project community.
The code is published under the MIT licence, so it can be freely used and modified. This allows MOTIS to take the place of proprietary transit routing services such as Google Directions. The contact address and imprint belong to triptix GmbH, a German company in Darmstadt. No foreign parent company is named, and no hosted offering for MOTIS itself is described. The operator of an instance therefore decides where routing requests and timetable data are processed, which matters for European transport organisations.
