My5: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

My5 is the free streaming service of the British broadcaster Channel 5, for live and on-demand viewing. Since the relaunch in March 2025, the channel and its streaming service share a single brand, '5'. The service features drama, factual programmes and the Milkshake! children's block, supplemented by shows from Paramount brands and new free live channels. Viewers use the service as SaaS through the web and apps. The software is not open source.

The streaming service is provided by Channel 5 Broadcasting Limited, a British broadcaster headquartered in London and owned by the US media group Paramount. That US parent is a CLOUD Act signal. The website remains channel5.com and the broadcast licence remains with Channel 5 Broadcasting Limited. A European organisation or viewer using the service therefore deals with a UK provider with a US owner.

Why digital sovereignty matters with My5

My5 is headquartered in GB, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor. The ultimate owner is based in US. Foreign control undermines part of the certainty a European headquarters offers.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so My5 scores best on data residency.

My5 is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs My5 together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
