Netcore Email API: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Netcore Email API (formerly Pepipost) is a cloud service for getting transactional and triggered emails into recipients' inboxes. You send either through an SMTP relay, suited to your own mail servers or applications that speak SMTP, or through an HTTP web API, suited to online portals and mobile apps. The service is part of Netcore Cloud and is delivered as SaaS. The software is not open source.

Netcore Cloud is based in Mumbai, India, and according to a company profile is a privately held company, Netcore Private Limited. According to its developer documentation, Netcore supports regional data processing and storage in the United States, India and Europe; an account is assigned to one of these regions so that all data is routed through the corresponding data centre. The documentation does not name the European city where that data centre is located. For a European organisation, an Indian vendor with an EU region is relevant: choose the EU region explicitly when setting up, and have the location recorded contractually.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Netcore Email API

Netcore Email API is headquartered in IN, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Netcore Email API hosts data in EU, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Netcore Email API is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Netcore Email API together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
