NS1: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

NS1 Connect is a managed DNS service that steers users to the best endpoint based on performance, availability and geography. According to the vendor, it turns DNS into a real-time traffic control plane. The service runs on a global anycast network and includes DNS health checks, traffic steering, DNSSEC, secondary DNS via zone transfer. Typical uses are multi-CDN steering, global server load balancing and DNS observability. NS1 is consumed as a hosted cloud service; the vendor does not describe a self-hosted or on-premises variant.

NS1 is based in New York and, following IBM's acquisition announced in February 2023, is offered as an IBM product (NS1 Connect). It therefore sits under a US parent company, which is relevant to CLOUD Act considerations. The software is not open source. Public sources do not state in which regions customer data is stored; an organisation that wants to keep DNS configuration and logs within the EU should settle this contractually with IBM.

Why digital sovereignty matters with NS1

NS1 is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

NS1 hosts data outside the EU (US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

NS1 is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs NS1 together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
