Opencast is open-source software for the automated capture, processing, management and distribution of video, mainly for higher education and research institutions. It is used for lecture recording and video management and includes its own video portal, a web-based production environment and an editor. Opencast is written in Java and JavaScript and is installed and operated by the institution itself, or through one of the hosting vendors listed on the project site.
Opencast is developed by an international community of developers from universities and other organisations; the project began in 2007 at the University of California, Berkeley, and has been part of the Apereo Foundation since 2016, which acts as its legal entity. There is therefore no commercial owner. The software is released under the Educational Community License 2.0. Because you host it yourself, you decide where the data is stored and can stay within Europe and under your own control. The project has an active German-speaking community and holds an international summit in Munich in 2027.
