OpenCode: sovereignty score and 6 European alternatives

OpenCode is an open-source AI coding agent for the terminal, as a desktop app or as an IDE extension. It automatically loads suitable language servers, can run several agents in parallel on one project and creates shareable session links. Built-in agents cover building and planning (read-only). For models you can use bundled free ones, sign in with GitHub Copilot or ChatGPT, or connect many providers through Models.dev, including local models. There is also Zen, a selection of models tested by the team.

The code is MIT-licensed and developed by Anomaly. According to OpenCode, it does not store your code or context itself; data goes to the model provider you choose. For Zen, the models are hosted in the US and the EU, and most providers apply zero retention and do not train on your data, with exceptions such as free models and providers that retain requests for 30 days. With local models, prompts stay on your own machine. A European organisation can thus decide which provider and region to use.

Why digital sovereignty matters with OpenCode

OpenCode is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

OpenCode hosts data in US, EU. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

OpenCode is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs OpenCode together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
