OpenSMTPD is an open-source SMTP server, the server side of the protocol that email systems use to exchange messages. It follows RFC 5321 and supports the standard extensions to that protocol. It is developed as part of the OpenBSD project, by a team of developers together with contributors from the OpenBSD community, and it is free to use and reuse under an ISC licence.
OpenSMTPD is software rather than a hosted service: the organisation installs and operates it itself, so it decides where the server runs and who can access it. For an organisation that wants outbound mail from its own applications to leave through infrastructure it controls, instead of a relay service run by a foreign provider, this is the relevant alternative. The OpenBSD project is supported by the OpenBSD Foundation, a Canadian not-for-profit corporation. Because the code is published under an open licence, the organisation's own security staff can review it.
