OpenWrt is an open source Linux distribution for routers and other embedded devices. Rather than a single static firmware, it provides a fully writable file system with optional package management, so users can add software and change the network configuration. It is developed by a community of contributors and distributed as precompiled images and source code. Its build environment is licensed under the GNU GPL version 2. OpenWrt runs on the device itself, not as a vendor-hosted service.
The project follows governance rules inherited from the former LEDE project. The OpenWrt trademark and legal matters are handled by Software in the Public Interest, a US non-profit organisation with 501(c)(3) status. The project is run by its community, and the website names no company or foreign parent that controls it. OpenWrt operates no cloud service of its own. For a European organisation the code can be inspected and run on its own equipment. It is provided without warranty, so support depends on the community or on a commercial provider.
