OsmAnd: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

OsmAnd is an offline maps and navigation app for Android, iOS and Huawei AppGallery, built on OpenStreetMap data. It provides detailed offline maps, offline voice navigation with lane guidance and rerouting, address and category search, foot, hiking and bike paths, public transport stops, GPX trip recording, and plugins for contour lines and hill shading. Maps are updated monthly, and OsmAnd Live provides hourly updates.

The project is maintained by OsmAnd B.V. in Amstelveen, the Netherlands. The source code is licensed under GPLv3, with artwork under CC-BY-NC-ND 4.0. According to its privacy policy, OsmAnd collects aggregated usage data without personal identifiers; map downloads are logged with a UUID, IP address, time and region, but not for manually installed maps. The optional OsmAnd Cloud stores synchronised data on Scaleway and Amazon servers, without naming their locations. Purchases are processed by FastSpring, which may transfer data to the United States.

Why digital sovereignty matters with OsmAnd

OsmAnd is headquartered in NL and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so OsmAnd scores best on data residency.

OsmAnd is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs OsmAnd together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
