Placetel is a German cloud telephony service for businesses. It is a software-based phone system that is not tied to one fixed location and is managed through a web browser. Besides telephony, the offering includes video calls, chat and integrations with CRM and helpdesk systems. The service is delivered as a cloud service, without a phone system installed in the office. Placetel is operated by Gamma Placetel GmbH, based in Cologne, and the provider makes a data processing agreement (AVV) available for download.
Placetel was acquired from Cisco by Gamma Communications in 2024. Gamma Communications plc is a UK-listed group headquartered in Newbury, England. Because this UK parent company sits outside the EU, the ownership chain is non-EU, which matters when assessing control. According to the provider's website, the cloud telephony servers are operated exclusively in Europe, with backup infrastructure in several German and European data centres. For a European organisation the hosting location is within the EU, while the UK owner deserves attention in the contract.
