PlanetScale: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

PlanetScale is a managed database platform for MySQL and Postgres. For MySQL it is built on Vitess, the open-source project developed at YouTube and maintained by PlanetScale; it offers horizontal scaling through sharding, online schema changes, no-downtime upgrades and built-in connection pooling. PlanetScale also provides managed Postgres clusters, including PlanetScale Metal (NVMe-backed storage) and Neki for sharded Postgres. The service runs on AWS and Google Cloud and can also be bought through both providers' marketplaces.

PlanetScale, Inc. was founded in 2018 by the creators and maintainers of Vitess and lists a US address in San Francisco. According to its documentation, European regions are available: Frankfurt and Dublin on AWS, and Belgium and the Netherlands on Google Cloud, alongside regions elsewhere in the world. With PlanetScale Managed you can have the database run in your own cloud account. As a US provider, PlanetScale is subject to US jurisdiction even when the data is stored in the EU.

Why digital sovereignty matters with PlanetScale

PlanetScale is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

PlanetScale hosts data in EU, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

PlanetScale is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs PlanetScale together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
