PrimTux: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

PrimTux is an educational Linux distribution for primary schools and for use at home. It offers several learning environments, from nursery school up to the start of secondary school, with a collection of free educational activities and tools behind an easy menu. Secured internet search through QwantJunior and parental controls are included, and the system is meant to run on older computers too. You install it from an ISO image, and the current release is based on Linux Mint.

PrimTux is developed by its project team, supported by the French association Collectif Primtux, which exists to promote and develop the distribution. The project describes it as free software, part of the French NIRD approach, and it is listed in the French government's SILL of recommended free software. Because the system runs entirely on your own hardware, there is no vendor cloud: data stays on the school's or family's own machines.

Why digital sovereignty matters with PrimTux

PrimTux is headquartered in FR and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so PrimTux scores best on data residency.

PrimTux is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs PrimTux together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
