ProcessWire: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

ProcessWire is a free, open-source CMS and content management framework (CMF) written in PHP. Pages sit in a tree with no depth limit and can hold custom fields of any type, including repeatable fields. Templates are plain PHP files, and the API is aimed at developers who want full control over fields and markup. ProcessWire also offers multi-language support, role-based access control, a hooks system and a modular extension model; editors can edit text and images on the website itself. Besides MySQL it supports SQLite and PostgreSQL. You install ProcessWire on your own web server.

ProcessWire is licensed under the Mozilla Public License 2.0; some components use the MIT licence. It began around 2003 and has been a community open-source project since 2010, led by its founder Ryan Cramer. According to its creator, no commercial version is planned. Because the product is self-hosted, you decide where the data resides, and a European organisation can run it on EU infrastructure without vendor dependence.

Why digital sovereignty matters with ProcessWire

ProcessWire is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so ProcessWire scores best on data residency.

ProcessWire is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs ProcessWire together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
