Puppet Enterprise is an IT operations platform for automating, scaling and securing infrastructure. It applies desired-state configuration across servers, networks, cloud and edge, supports policy-driven security and compliance with audit reporting, and integrates with DevOps toolchains. Puppet Enterprise is installed and run by the customer: installer archives are downloaded to a primary server running Linux, and agents run on many operating systems, including Windows and macOS.
Puppet has been owned since 2022 by Perforce Software, Inc., which is headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and is backed by Clearlake Capital and Francisco Partners. Puppet Enterprise is commercial software that requires a licence, and Puppet describes its hardened Puppet Core builds as an alternative to community-supported open source. Because the platform runs on the customer's own infrastructure, the customer decides where the primary server and its data reside, including in the EU. The US parent remains relevant for licensing, support and updates, where US law such as the CLOUD Act can apply.
