Pydantic AI: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Pydantic AI is an open-source Python framework (MIT licence) for AI agents, built by the team behind Pydantic. It offers typed agents with structured outputs, typed dependency injection and tools, support for MCP and web search, and durable execution through engines such as Temporal, DBOS and Prefect. Models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Bedrock, Groq, Mistral, Ollama and others can be swapped with a string. Optional extras are a Pydantic AI Gateway and Logfire, an observability platform based on OpenTelemetry.

The contracting entity, Pydantic Services Inc., has a US notice address (Delaware) and uses New York law; the press has described the company as UK-based. The library runs inside your own application. Logfire is hosted in two separate regions: the EU on Google Cloud in the Netherlands (europe-west4) and the US (us-east4); a self-hosted enterprise option also exists. The privacy policy refers to the GDPR and relies on standard contractual clauses for transfers. With external model providers, they determine where prompts are processed.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Pydantic AI

Pydantic AI is headquartered in GB, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Pydantic AI hosts data in EU, US. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Pydantic AI is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Pydantic AI together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
