Qlik Sense: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Qlik Sense is Qlik's analytics platform for business intelligence and data visualisation. Organisations use it to explore data freely, build dashboards and apps, ask questions in plain language, create predictive models and distribute reports by email. The product is delivered through Qlik Cloud, Qlik's SaaS environment, on which its current analytics offering builds.

Qlik was founded in Lund, Sweden, in 1993, but is now headquartered in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, and has been owned since 2016 by the US private equity firm Thoma Bravo. That US ownership is relevant to CLOUD Act exposure. Customers can choose a European region for Qlik Cloud, including Dublin, Frankfurt, Paris and London, and Qlik lists a European Sovereign Cloud in Brandenburg as planned. Qlik Sense is not open source. For a European organisation this means a choice of data-storage region, but not full legal independence from the US owner.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Qlik Sense

Qlik Sense is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Qlik Sense hosts data in EU, US. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Qlik Sense is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Qlik Sense together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
