Rompslomp: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Rompslomp is a Dutch online bookkeeping and invoicing program for self-employed people, freelancers and small business owners. It supports quotes and invoices with custom branding, online quote signing, automatic reminders and recurring invoices, and automatically calculates the profit-and-loss statement, the balance sheet and the VAT return. Receipts are stored through Dropbox or the app, and hours and mileage can be tracked and turned into invoices. Apps are available for Android and iOS, along with a payment account, e-invoicing and integrations. The service is delivered as SaaS.

Rompslomp.nl B.V. is based in The Hague and has been part of Visma, a Norwegian software group, since its acquisition in January 2022. According to its privacy policy (a version from August 2022), account data is stored only in Europe, on Amazon AWS servers. The software is not open source and no self-hosted edition is described. For a European organisation this means a Dutch service with a Norwegian parent company and a US infrastructure provider.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Rompslomp

Rompslomp is headquartered in NL and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data. The ultimate owner is based in NO, also within Europe.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Rompslomp scores best on data residency.

Rompslomp is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.
