Sakai is an open-source learning management system that instructors use to design and deliver teaching. It offers course tools such as lessons, modules, quizzes, assignments, files and conditional release, communication tools for messaging, discussions and collaboration, and integration with third-party applications through IMS LTI and an extensive API. It is used mainly by universities and can be installed on your own servers or obtained from a service provider.
Sakai has no single vendor: the community oversees and develops the system together, under the stewardship of the Apereo Foundation, a non-profit with members from education and commercial affiliates. The software is released under the Educational Community License. Commercial affiliates such as Longsight, Learning Experiences and EDF develop, host and support Sakai. For a European organisation this means you can run the software yourself and decide where the data is kept, or choose a hosting partner and assess that partner's company location and hosting region.
