Schoology: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Schoology Learning, part of PowerSchool Learning Management, is a learning management system for primary and secondary education (K-12). It connects teachers, students and families: parents can see assignments, progress and classroom activity. It offers, among other things, an AI assistant (PowerBuddy), a lesson planner, groups and course templates, conditional release of assignments, a mastery-based gradebook, assessment tools and LTI connections. It integrates with other PowerSchool products, with other student information systems through OneRoster, and with Microsoft and Google.

PowerSchool is based in Folsom, California, and according to Wikipedia is owned by Bain Capital; PowerSchool acquired Schoology in 2019. As a US provider it falls under US jurisdiction, including the CLOUD Act. The product page does not state where data is hosted or whether an EU hosting option exists. The software is not open source. A European school or education organisation should therefore have the hosting location, transfer mechanisms and data processing terms confirmed in writing beforehand.

Is Schoology one of many dependencies?

Score your whole stack in about three minutes. Free, no account needed.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Schoology

Schoology is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Schoology hosts data in EU, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Schoology is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Schoology together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
