ScyllaDB: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

ScyllaDB is a NoSQL database for data-intensive applications that need high throughput and predictably low latency, such as feature stores and vector search. It is compatible with Apache Cassandra and, through ScyllaDB Alternator, offers a DynamoDB-compatible API. A managed cloud service, ScyllaDB Cloud, runs on AWS and Google Cloud and can also be deployed in your own cloud account (BYOA). You can also operate ScyllaDB yourself, including on Kubernetes with the ScyllaDB Operator.

ScyllaDB Inc. grew out of Cloudius Systems and has locations in Israel and the United States; sources differ on which counts as its headquarters. Since December 2024 the actively developed version is no longer open source under the AGPL but source-available under the ScyllaDB Software License Agreement. The source code remains viewable, but the free tier is limited to 10 TB of disk and 50 vCPUs per organisation. Version 6.2 and earlier remain available under the AGPL. Self-hosting gives you control over data location, but the licence terms are set by the vendor.

Why digital sovereignty matters with ScyllaDB

ScyllaDB is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

ScyllaDB hosts data in US, EU. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

ScyllaDB is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs ScyllaDB together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
