Seneca Learning: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Seneca Learning is an online homework and revision platform for pupils in the United Kingdom, from primary school to A Level, and for other UK qualifications such as GCSE, IB Diploma and BTEC. Teachers can set homework and revision on the platform, which includes courses, AI marking of exam questions and an AI tutor. It is delivered through a web app and mobile apps.

Seneca Learning is based in London. In 2022 GoStudent, a company based in Vienna, Austria, acquired it, and the two companies said they would continue to operate independently under their own brands. Seneca's help centre states that data is stored within the European Union, in Dublin, with 256-bit AES encryption, in cloud storage provided by a third party. For schools it acts as a data processor, and for people who sign up directly as a data controller. For a European school, the EU storage location is a relevant factor, and the ownership chain runs from the UK operator to an Austrian parent.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Seneca Learning

Seneca Learning is headquartered in GB, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor. The ultimate owner is based in AT, also within Europe.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Seneca Learning scores best on data residency.

Seneca Learning is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Seneca Learning together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
