ShareX: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

ShareX is a free Windows program for capturing the screen, recording it and sharing files. You take screenshots or screen recordings, edit them and send them to one of the supported upload services. It installs as an ordinary desktop application and is aimed at individual users and teams who often need to capture and share what is on screen.

ShareX is free software under the GPL (version 3) and is maintained by the ShareX Team; no company or foundation is named. The public profile of the lead developer lists Turkey; the co-founder lists Australia. According to its privacy policy, the application itself collects no data. It does check GitHub for updates at start-up and periodically afterwards. Files go only to services you choose and configure yourself, so you decide where your data ends up. The source code is hosted on GitHub and open to inspection.

Why digital sovereignty matters with ShareX

ShareX is headquartered in TR, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

ShareX hosts data outside the EU (OTHER). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

ShareX is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs ShareX together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
