ShowVoc: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

ShowVoc is a web platform for publishing and consulting OWL ontologies, SKOS and SKOS-XL thesauri, Ontolex-lemon lexicons and generic RDF datasets. It offers a browsing environment for the content, a global search across datasets and a translation API for multilingual terms. It is delivered as source code and an installation package (a web archive or a static front end) and runs on top of the Semantic Turkey RDF service.

ShowVoc is developed by the ART research group at the University of Rome Tor Vergata in Italy, which also holds the copyright. According to the project site it was first funded by the European Commission's ISA² programme and is now funded by the Digital Europe Programme. The licence is BSD-3-Clause, an OSI-approved open-source licence. You can install it yourself, so that vocabularies and data stay on your own infrastructure. The project site lists no hosted service from the developers. The source code is actively updated.

Why digital sovereignty matters with ShowVoc

ShowVoc is headquartered in IT and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so ShowVoc scores best on data residency.

ShowVoc is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs ShowVoc together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
