ARX is an open-source program for anonymising personal and sensitive data. It applies privacy models such as k-anonymity, l-diversity and t-closeness, supports transformation methods such as generalisation and suppression, and includes analysis that shows how much analytical value remains after anonymisation. It works with SQL databases, Excel and CSV files and is available as a cross-platform desktop application as well as a Java library with an API. According to its website, it is used in research projects and in sharing clinical trial data.
ARX is developed by the Medical Informatics Group at the Berlin Institute of Health at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. The software is licensed under Apache 2.0 and runs entirely on your own computers or servers, so personal data does not have to leave the organisation. For a European organisation that wants to anonymise datasets before sharing them with researchers or vendors, it is a self-operated alternative to proprietary de-identification suites, and the full source code is available for inspection.
