SigmaOS: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

SigmaOS is a browser for macOS, built on Apple's WebKit engine and written in native SwiftUI. It offers workspaces, vertical tabs, split-screen viewing and an AI assistant called Airis. Passwords can be stored in Apple Keychain. Windows and iOS versions were announced by the vendor as planned but not yet available.

SigmaOS Inc. is registered in England and Wales, with its registered office in London, so the publisher is outside the EU. Its privacy policy says personal information may be stored and processed in any country where the company operates, without naming those countries. Cloud sync, which is off by default, runs on Amazon Web Services, and the AI assistant is described as using LLM agents whose processing locations are not stated. A European organisation should assess these transfers before enabling sync or the AI features.

Why digital sovereignty matters with SigmaOS

SigmaOS is headquartered in GB, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

SigmaOS hosts data outside the EU (OTHER). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

SigmaOS is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs SigmaOS together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
