SilverStripe: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Silverstripe CMS is a free, open-source content management system and PHP framework. It offers a web-based admin panel with a WYSIWYG editor, draft and published versions with revision rollback, role-based permissions, multilingual content, image resizing, full-text search and XML sitemaps. The CMS is a module on top of the Silverstripe Framework, an MVC framework with an ORM. You install it yourself on a web server running Apache, nginx or IIS with MySQL or MariaDB. Silverstripe Ltd, the creator of the CMS, also offers Silverstripe Cloud, a hosting platform optimised for the CMS.

Silverstripe CMS and the framework are released under the BSD licence (BSD-3-Clause), so self-hosting is possible without licence fees. A European organisation can therefore run it on its own or on European infrastructure and decide where the data resides. If you choose the managed Silverstripe Cloud, check with the provider which region stores the data and which jurisdiction the provider falls under.

Why digital sovereignty matters with SilverStripe

SilverStripe is headquartered in NZ, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so SilverStripe scores best on data residency.

SilverStripe is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs SilverStripe together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
