The Smart Village App is an open-source platform for citizen apps of towns, municipalities and rural districts, available for iOS and Android. A municipality assembles its app from modules such as local news, an event calendar, a business directory, service links, push messages, weather and a function for reporting problems. An accompanying backend with an editorial system and a DataHub pulls content from external sources, including RSS, JSON and XML interfaces.
The software is developed by Smart Village Solutions SVS GmbH in Bad Belzig, Germany, together with the municipalities that use it. The source code is published on OpenCoDE, the German public sector's software platform, under the GPL-3.0-or-later. According to the vendor, the backend runs in its own data centre in Berlin, including support and updates. Because the code is open, a municipality can also have the app set up and hosted by another service provider, which keeps data within the EU and limits dependence on a single supplier.
