Snipcart: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Snipcart is a shopping cart and checkout platform that developers and merchants add to an existing website, so that the site can sell products without a redirect to a separate shop. A snippet of code is enough to start, and the cart stays inside the site's own front end. An API and webhooks connect it to other tools, and it works with static-site generators, JavaScript frameworks and content management systems. It is delivered as a SaaS service.

Snipcart is a Canadian company ("Built in Canada" according to its site). Duda, a web-building platform based in Palo Alto, California, announced the acquisition of Snipcart in 2021, which makes a US company its parent. The product is not open source. Snipcart's site does not state where customer data is hosted, so a European organisation should confirm the hosting region and the data processing terms with the vendor, and take into account that a US parent can bring US legal access requirements into scope.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Snipcart

Snipcart is headquartered in CA, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor. The ultimate owner is based in US. Foreign control undermines part of the certainty a European headquarters offers.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Snipcart scores best on data residency.

Snipcart is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Snipcart together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
