SOPlanning: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

SOPlanning (Simple Online Planning) is a web-based shared planning tool for teams. Managers and team members use it to assign tasks to people across projects, see workload and availability and, optionally, manage resources and locations alongside tasks. It offers day and month views with drag and drop, milestones, recurring tasks, a REST API, iCal feeds to Google Calendar, Outlook and Apple Mail, exports to PDF, CSV and Gantt, and sign-in through LDAP, Active Directory or Google. You install it on your own web server (a Docker image is available) or use it as a hosted Pro service.

SOPlanning is published by Simple Online Planning, based in Aix-en-Provence, France. The open-source edition can be downloaded and run on your own infrastructure under the GNU General Public License, so planning data stays with you. The publisher also offers a hosted Pro version, whose data is stored in France according to the vendor, as well as customised on-premise versions.

Why digital sovereignty matters with SOPlanning

SOPlanning is headquartered in FR and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so SOPlanning scores best on data residency.

SOPlanning is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs SOPlanning together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
