Tableau is a data-visualisation and business-intelligence platform owned by Salesforce. Users connect relational databases, cloud databases and spreadsheets and build interactive visualisations and dashboards with drag-and-drop tools. The product family includes Tableau Desktop, Tableau Prep, Tableau Server and the hosted Tableau Cloud, alongside the free Tableau Public and Tableau Pulse. Tableau was founded in 2003, is based in Seattle, Washington, and was acquired by Salesforce in 2019.
Tableau is based in the United States and has been part of Salesforce, a US company, since 2019, so US law such as the CLOUD Act can apply to data it hosts. According to a 2016 report, Tableau opened a data centre in Dublin, Ireland, with a disaster-recovery site in Munich, so that customers of the then Tableau Online service could choose to store data in Europe instead of North America. The software is proprietary. European organisations should check which product and which hosting region apply to them.
