TagUI: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

TagUI is a free, open-source RPA tool in which you write flows in a simple scripting language to automate websites (natively in Chrome and Edge), desktop applications and the command line, on Windows, macOS and Linux. It identifies elements through web identifiers, image snapshots, screen coordinates or OCR text. It can export web tables to CSV, read and write Excel cells, supports flows in 22 languages besides English, and has community integrations for Python, C#, Node-RED and Power Automate Desktop. You run it yourself, including as a Docker image.

TagUI was developed by AI Singapore, funded under the AI Singapore Programme by Singapore's National Research Foundation, and is licensed under Apache 2.0. According to the repository, AI Singapore has discontinued maintenance and support, and community contributors continue the project. Because the software runs on your own systems, no data goes to a vendor-hosted service. Its origin lies outside Europe, and no European legal entity is involved.

Why digital sovereignty matters with TagUI

TagUI is headquartered in SG, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

TagUI hosts data in EU, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

TagUI is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs TagUI together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
