Greenplum is a massively parallel data warehouse based on PostgreSQL, built for large-scale analytics and data processing across many servers. It began as an open-source project and was developed further through EMC, Pivotal and VMware; the product is now called VMware Tanzu Greenplum and sits within Tanzu by Broadcom. Organisations install it on their own servers or virtual machines, or deploy it in a cloud environment of their own. The vendor does not offer a hosted service of its own.
Broadcom is headquartered in Palo Alto, United States, and acquired VMware in November 2023. In May 2024 Tanzu by Broadcom decided to close the source of Greenplum: future releases ship only as part of the VMware Tanzu Data Suite. The product is therefore no longer open source, which increases dependence on a single US vendor and its licensing policy. Because the software runs on your own infrastructure, you decide where the data resides. Community forks of the earlier open-source code exist, but they are separate products.
